New Shredder Combines Security Protection with Paper Recyclability

Keywords: Eco-business / Social Venture Manufacturing industry

Fuji Xerox Co., Ltd. has developed an eco-friendly shredder for office use that combines information security features with paper recycling. The machine, employing the company's original "tear and crush" system and named Trust-Eco 1500, was put on the market on November 18, 2005.

Paper fed into the shredder is torn into uneven and irregular paper chips, stirred and compressed, which makes documents harder to reconstruct or decipher and thus provides higher security. At the same time, the paper fibers are not cut finely but left intact for easier recycling. As a result, paper shreds that used to be disposed of as combustible waste can now be reborn as resources.

With continuous processing of 150 sheets (A4-size) a minute, the machine operates at 100 volts (alternating current). The use of a variable motor significantly reduces power consumption from 1,150 watts to 860 watts even when handling the maximum load. The noise emitted during operation has been decreased from 63 decibels, as with conventional shredders, to 54.8 decibels, level equivalent to that of a digital multifunctional printer of office use. In addition, this product complies with Class B of VCCI (Voluntary Control Council for Interference by Information Technology Equipment) standards related to radio interference as well as the evaluation criteria and the factors for consideration of the Green Purchasing Law in Japan concerning shredders.
