Kyocera Launches Medium-Scale Solar Power Systems

Keywords: Eco-business / Social Venture Manufacturing industry Renewable Energy

Kyocera Corp., a Japanese manufacturer of electronic components and photovoltaic (PV) systems, started marketing in October 2005 the ECONOROOTS WIDE, a series of medium-scale PV power generation systems (with a generating capacity of 10 to 13 kilowatts) for private facilities, such as kindergartens, gas stations and convenience stores.

Amid growing interest in solar power generation as a way of helping reduce greenhouse gas emissions, an increasing number of businesses and organizations have introduced PV power generation systems with the aim of reducing their environmental impacts. The number of medium-scale PV systems installed in 2004 jumped by 72 percent over the previous year (based on data from field test projects commissioned by the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization, or NEDO).

In view of the strategic importance of medium-scale PV systems for private facilities, Kyocera has come up with a new business plan to integrate medium systems into the market for small PV systems for residential use. This integration has allowed the ECONOROOTS WIDE to improve its cost performance by sharing components with residential models. The company intends to promote the use of these medium-scale systems through existing sales channels for residential models.
