Tokyo Gov't Project to Boost Efficiency of Logistics and Deliveries in City

Keywords: Local government Manufacturing industry Transportation / Mobility

On March 29, 2005, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government established an "Environmental Distribution Project Committee" together with land developers such as large real estate companies, as well as trucking associations and others in the logistics business. Its aim is to enhance the efficiency of the distribution and logistics systems in large building complexes to be constructed in the future. This is the first time in Japan that developers and logistics businesses have come together to discuss logistics from the building planning stage.

The collaboration has two purposes. The first is to make the delivery of items inside buildings more efficient by smoothing the traffic conditions for delivery trucks inside and around buildings, for example, by easing traffic congestion at building entrances. The second is to create consolidated delivery systems for delivery trucks going to and from buildings, aiming to reduce the number of the vehicles on the road and total traffic volume.

Committee members will meet and discuss coordinated delivery systems inside and outside of large building complexes on a project-by-project basis. In addition, the committee plans to create a new model for logistics inside buildings by taking innovative approaches to boost distribution efficiency.
