Mazda Motor Corp., a leading automaker in Japan, announced on October 15, 2004 that the Development Bank of Japan (DBJ) has given the company its highest rank in a screening process for its "Eco-friendly Management Project," a loan program for promoting environment-conscious management. Mazda is the first auto maker to qualify for loans under this project.

In this loan program, the DBJ evaluates applicant companies on the basis of their environmental consciousness in management by using a unique rating method developed by the bank. The program aims to make loans to cover funds earmarked for developing environment-conscious management, and the ranking of qualified companies determines which of three different interest rates will be applied.

The program is the world's first loan system that incorporates an environmental rating method to comprehensively evaluate companies' efforts using three sets of criteria: overall business management, business activities and environmental performance.

The acquisition of ISO14001 certification has earned praise for Mazda, which applies three well-balanced management criteria based on a stepped-up program of environmental management. The development of fuel-efficient and low-emission vehicles equipped with new-type engines and the achievement of zero emissions at its production sites in Japan represent results of Mazda's environmental management program.
