Nissan Motor Diesel Launches Heavy Duty Truck To Comply with 2005 Regulations

Nissan Diesel Motor Co. launched "Quon," a series of heavy duty trucks, on November 19, 2004, a year before Japan's New Long-Term Exhaust Emission Regulations come into force in 2005. Quon complies with the new regulations, which are to be the most stringent requirements on diesel engine emissions in the world.

The new regulations call for limiting particulate matter (PM) emissions to 0.027 gram per kilowatt-hour and nitrogen oxide (NOx) to 2.0 gram per kilowatt-hour. The company has developed the Final Low Emission New Diesel System "FLENDS," a urea selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system, to comply with the new regulations. The total control system reduces PM drastically by injecting fuels under ultra-high pressure and then a urea SCR catalyst is used as an after-treatment to reduce NOx emissions.

The urea SCR catalyst is a 32.5 percent aqueous solution which decomposes NOx into harmless nitrogen and water by an oxidation-reduction reaction. The urea solution is being produced by Mitsui Chemicals, Inc. and provided in 787 truck stations and 185 Nissan Diesel service centers nationwide.
