Shimizu Corp., a major construction company and developer in Japan, announced on June 24th, 2004 that it has jointly developed with Kyodo Ky-Tec Corp. a new gardening product called "Nenju-hanamizuki" in Japanese, which means "enjoy flowers all year round".

The specially designed planter, which can be put together in a variety of ways, consists of two containers fitted with a unique automatic irrigating system. The lower container can hold up to 60 liters of water per square meter, which supplies water to soil in the upper container through an absorbent medium.

The lower reservoir container can hold enough water to irrigate plants for about two weeks, keeping them alive even when residents are absent for a fairly long period. Plants normally selected for use in these planters include small shrubs and perennial plants that bloom year-round.

With prospects for further, extensive use in various settings such as entrance halls or rooftops as well as on verandas, the Shimizu Corp. plans to promote this product mainly to real estate developing corporations.
