NTT DoCoMo, Japan's leading mobile phone carrier, extended the operation of the environment-friendly base stations to the company's new generation of cell phone service, Freedom of Mobile Multimedia Access (FOMA) on July 1, 2004. The DoCoMo Eco-Tower in Tateyama, Chiba Prefecture, generates its own electricity and does not rely on a commercial power supply.

The "CV Tateyama Ito Base Station" uses solar and wind power to meet all of its electricity needs for operation. The construction materials for the tower are all recyclable and do not result in industrial waste. A heat exchanger is used for air-conditioning of the equipment box; hence there is no emission of CO2.

The antenna pole is made of recyclable fiber-reinforced plastic (FRP), and the tower site is paved with used ceramic roof tiles instead of concrete or asphalt. The cables contains no halogens, lead, or polyvinyl chloride. Careful consideration was given to every material used in the eco-tower to ensure that it is environmentally friendly.

The NTT DoCoMo Group already had 16 conventional cell phone stations in operation using photovoltaic and wind power generation systems, and this new station is the first base station for the FOMA service.
