Joint Venture to Promote Next-Generation Power Storage System

Four Japanese companies, Omron Corp., Mitsui & Co., Okamura Laboratory, Inc., and Power System Co., have reached an agreement to proceed with a joint venture aiming to promote the full-scale use of a high performance electrical power storage system using electric double layer capacitors, called ECaSS.

Essentially, an electric double layer capacitor can store electricity as it is without any conversion, but conventional electric double layer capacitors have inadequate storage capacity (energy density). With its dramatically improved storage capacity the ECaSS is being seen as a next-generation power storage system.

ECaSS uses an environmentally friendly technology that uses no harmful substances such as lead, and is also expected to contribute to solving energy and environmental problems on a global scale as a means of advancing high-efficiency energy use.

Technologies used in this system include nanogate capacitors, activated carbon capacitors, and innovative electronic circuitry. The joint venture aims for sales of over 10 billion yen (U.S.$96 million) by the end of fiscal 2007 (end of March 2008) in the electric double layer capacitor market.
