Yokohama City has been making efforts to reduce trash under the slogan of "Yokohama G30," and recently revealed that household waste was successfully reduced by over 30 percent within one month of launching a model project that calls for the separation of more types of trash for recycling.

The project took effect on October 6, 2003 in model areas that include about 40 thousand households in the city. Plastic containers, spray cans, used paper and used clothing, previously collected as home waste, were instead recycled.

Consequently, home waste collected (three times weekly) in the model areas dropped to about 326.56 tons (on a weekly average) from 427.97, (a figure obtained one week before introduction of the model project). This is a cut of 166.4 tons, down more than 30 percent.

An interim policy plan lays out a goal for the city of cutting trash by 30 percent relative to FY 2001 levels by 2010. Yokohama, a city of 3.5 million people, is striving to achieve this target with the cooperation of citizens and private businesses.
