Japan Post to Use Recycled Paper for All Postcards

Keywords: Government Policy / Systems Reduce / Reuse / Recycle

Japan Post announced on July 16, 2003, that starting this November it will use recycled paper for all types of postcards it sells. This is one of its environmental policies for creating more eco-friendly post offices, based on the Japan Post Declaration on the Environment, adopted at the time of the organization's inauguration in April 2003. Japan Post replaces Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications as a part of government restructuring.

Currently, Japan Post utilizes recycled paper for 85 percent of its postcards, including postcards that come with a lottery feature, such as New Year's and other special seasonal correspondence. The new policy will also apply to ordinary, reply-paid, and international postcards, so all types of postcards will be made of recycled paper.

Japan Post's environmental policies also include introducing ISO 14001, an international standard for environmental management systems, and low-emission vehicles for mail collection and delivery.
