National Inter-Agency Eco-Driving Committee Holds First Meeting

Keywords: Climate Change Government Policy / Systems Transportation / Mobility

To effectively promote environmentally friendly driving, for example by eliminating unnecessary idling, Japan's National Police Agency, Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, and Ministry of the Environment established a liaison committee to promote eco-driving. This committee, set up to promote efficient carbon dioxide emission reduction through cross-ministry cooperation, held its first meeting on May 30, 2003.

At this first meeting, on-going measures were discussed and each participating body reported on its future plans, such as promotion of eco-driving techniques and vehicles with an "idling stop system" that automatically shuts the engine off when the vehicle stops.

In addition to the liaison committee consisting of department managers, a working-level committee consisting of their section chiefs was also established to pursue further study. The two committees will be working on the details of concrete measures that will be incorporated in the tentatively-named Action Plan to Promote Eco-Driving, slated for publication by the end of 2003.
