Environmental Accounting Guidelines Created for Private Railways

Keywords: Non-manufacturing industry Policy / Systems Transportation / Mobility

The Association of Japanese Private Railways has formulated Environmental Accounting Guidelines for Private Railways (2003 edition), which is now seen as the standard for private railway companies in introducing environmental accounting. The association has created these objective and unified guidelines in the hopes that each private railway company will disclose credible environmental information when introducing environmental accounting in their operations.

The Environmental Accounting Review Committee, with the participation of 16 major private railway companies, conducted a series of meetings and established the guidelines by compiling standard methods of environmental accounting that suit the characteristics of private railways. Using this common framework, private railways will be able to compile and disclose their own environmental accounting data.

The contents of the guidelines will be reviewed as required by changes in environmental protection activities and environmental accounting practices, as well as progress in environmental protection efforts.
