Bio-diesel Fuel Production Equipment Now on Sale

A Japanese environmental venture company named Sebec Co. has developed and launched sales of new equipment that can produce an alternative fuel to diesel, known as "neo-diesel fuel" (NDF), a "bio-diesel" fuel from waste cooking oil. This equipment can reproduce fuel from 400 liters of waste oil in about 8 hours of operation per day. Equipped with water discharge facilities such as a grease trap, it is easy to install.

No modifications are needed to make vehicles run on NDF, which combusts perfectly, reduces the generation of black smoke and does not emit sulfur oxides (SOx). NDF has been approved as a type of clean energy under Japan's Law concerning Promotion of the Use of New Energy, having lower environmentally impacts. Vehicles that run only on waste cooking oil are exempt from diesel taxes in Japan.

With the country's Food Recycling Law in mind, Sebec has been proposing a system to lend NDF plants for free to businesses that generate large amounts of waste oil, as long as they buy the recycled fuel that is produced. The recycled fuel will be cheaper than diesel by about 10 yen (about U.S.12 cents) per liter.

Japan's total production of vegetable oil in 1999 was 2.45 million tonnes, which probably results in at least 400,000 to 500,000 tonnes of waste oil annually. Some municipalities and companies are tackling the business challenge of recycling the waste cooking oil into fuel. Sebec's aim is to promote the recycling of waste cooking oil by introducing a system that has zero initial costs for businesses.
