Keywords: Chemicals Government Policy / Systems

The both Houses of the Japanese Diet approved the ratification of the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs), which prohibits the production and use of POPs. The government plans to complete the ratification process by the end of August.

The convention was adopted in May 2001 and has already been ratified by 14 countries, although the ratification of 50 countries is necessary for it to go into force. The treaty is designed to reduce or eliminate the production and use of 12 substances, including dioxins and PCBs, which are highly persistent in the environment.
