"Sustainability in Asia"

Japan for Sustainability (JFS) jointly held the Sustainability College Open Seminar titled "Sustainability in Asia" with National University of Singapore (NUS), as an open seminar of JFS-Daiwa Sustainability College. The purpose of the seminar is to empower the youth who can contribute to addressing sustainability issues both domestically and internationally. The participants discussed what sustainability means to Asia, especially in terms of "city", and what they can learn and contribute to each other.

Japan-U.S. Student Environmental Forum was held in June 2004. The event was jointly held by the Asia Scholars Program of the University of Kansas (KU) and the Japan for Sustainability. Fourteen Japanese college students from different universities in Japan, and nine students of KU participated in the forum. The Japanese students from different majors with interests related to environmental activities, gathered together. The students of KU visited Japan as part of "Japan Program" of the Asia Scholars Program, which provided them with leaning opportunities of Japanese culture, history, and lifestyle. In the forum, they discussed their differences and similarities, as well as common visions of a sustainable society.

Japan-U.S. Student Environmental Forum 2005 was jointed by nine American college students and 13 Japanese college students from various Japanese colleges. The American students visited Japan with Kansas Asia Scholars Program of the University of Kansas (KU), the U.S.A. with Dr. Patricia Graham who is a reader of JFS's newsletter. They presented and shared ideas about "Sustainable Society" and then jointly pictured their sustainable future.

About The 10th Eco-Products 2008 Exhibition

The exhibition was held from December 11th to 13th at Tokyo Big Sight (Tokyo International Exhibition Center) in Tokyo. Its aim is to accelerate the expansion of green markets by exhibiting environmentally friendly products and services. The exhibition was three-day event, one of largest environmental exhibition in Japan. In three days, there were more than 758 companies/organizations exhibited and 173,917 attended this year.

This year, theme was "We Can Do it! Eco-Lifestyle with a 50% CO2." Attendees were able to discover and learn from the exhibitors about various ways to cut CO₂ emissions from their lifestyles and daily life by 50%.

The discussion on climate-change related action is heating up around the world. Followed by the latest round of UN-sponsored global climate change talks in Bonn, discussions will continue at the approaching G8 Hokkaido Toyako Summit in July 2008. Here Japan will have an opportunity to share with the world its latest initiatives and ideas and help boost global awareness of the urgency of the problem and potential solutions.
