Hitachi's Environmental Vision 2025 Plan Aims to Curb 100 Million Tons of CO2 Emissions

In doing its part to promote environmental preservation and realize a sustainable society, Hitachi Ltd. announced on December 20, 2007, that the Hitachi Group has drafted a long-term company plan, called Environmental Vision 2025, which aims to reduce the amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions associated with its products by 100 million tons by fiscal year (FY) 2025.

Environmental Vision 2025 was launched to expand on the company's ongoing mid-term plan, Environmental Vision 2015, which was drafted in 2006 (See the related JFS article below). The vision for 2025 includes a new target to boost sales of Hitachi's eco-products in FY2010 to 6.6 trillion yen (62 billion dollars), about double that of FY2006, by investing in energy saving equipment and fuel conversion to increase the ratio of eco-friendly products from among all its products.

Hitachi set a goal to achieve "emission neutral" status, whereby direct environmental impact is offset by a reduction in societal-environmental impact by 2015. Direct environmental impact refers to emissions from energy related to production activities, such as greenhouse gases emitted from factories, and energy used for recycling waste and transportation. On the other hand, societal-environmental impact refers to the amount of electricity consumed by products and the energy used to recycle used products. After the goal is achieved, the company will proceed to a new target that reduces a much larger amount of its societal-environmental impact to cut 100 million tons of CO2 emissions from all the Hitachi group's products by 2025.

The company assigned a person to be Chief Environmental Strategy Officer of the Hitachi Group, and established its Environmental Strategy Office in January 1, 2008, in order to most effectively promote the new Environmental Vision 2025.
