An official game of Japanese pro baseball teams held at Meiji Jingu Stadium in Tokyo on September 11, 2007, was the first game in Japanese baseball history to be powered by renewable energy. The game involved the Tokyo Yakult Swallows and the Yomiuri Giants.
The game was sponsored by Intel Corp. and Lenovo Japan Co., official sponsors of the Tokyo Yakult Swallows. Green Power Certificates for 5,000 kWh issued by Green Energy Com were used to operate the lights in the Stadium.
The renewable electricity for these green certificates was generated by the biogas generating facility at Isesaki Purification Center in Isesaki City, Gunma Prefecture. The center generates electricity by using methane gas emitted in the process of purifying sewage water through sewage lines coming from homes and factories.
